Permanent CD-R Data Archiving

Your valued data is stored on a variety of computer media, hard disk drives, floppy diskettes,  Zip disks, and backup-tape cartridges.  These storage media are mechanical and/or electro-mechanical-magnetic storage devices.  These miracle devices of science and industry are wonderful until they fail, when suddenly they become the bane of your existence.

Consider the anxiety and the hours of uncompensated labor involved in recreating an important document such as a deposition or court transcript.  Consider the loss of important tax, financial or business data that often cannot be accurately recreated.  This kind of data loss occurs frequently.  In fact, you may have already lost data and are not yet aware of it.

Data loss occurs in many ways.  Other than the obvious mechanical, electrical or logical failure of a storage device, such as a hard drive crash, data written to magnetic storage media degrades over time.  The magnetic medium of hard drives, floppy diskettes, Zip disks, and backup-tape cartridges is constantly being influenced by electromagnetic radiation.  Electromagnetic radiation is naturally produced by the Earth and also by every electrical device and appliance we use.  Data on backup-tape cartridges and floppy disks have been completely erased when stored too close to a television set, audio amplifier, or other electronic device -- including building wiring.  The degradation usually occurs very slowly, over a period of years, but could take place in an instant if the electromagnetic source were powerful enough.

Fortunately science and industry has given us an alternative storage medium that does not degrade over time. The CD recordable compact disc uses a laser to write or burn data to the disc.  These discs are not susceptible to electromagnetic radiation and, therefore, are considerably more reliable, particularly for long-term storage.

To protect your valued data, KJ's PC Support can read most data currently stored on magnetic media and archive it to permanent CD-R.

Data transfers are currently being done on a job-by-job basis.  Estimates are provided pending evaluation of current storage media and data volume.
